Don’t let the name intimidate you — these sharks are harmless and add an exhilarating touch to your snorkeling experience. Early mornings are the best time to spot the sharks and avoid crowds, but you’re more likely to see turtles in the afternoon.
Hin Wong Bay offers a more rugged and adventurous snorkeling experience. Surrounded by rocky outcrops, the underwater scenery here is dramatic and diverse. The bay is home to schools of fusiliers, groupers, and even some macro life for those who enjoy a closer look. Since it’s less frequented than other spots, Hin Wong Bay offers a more tranquil and immersive experience. If you go snorkeling at night here, you may even spot an octopus! The walk down is easy, more difficult on the way back up, but still only a few minutes. Parking costs 20 baht.
Located on the northern tip of Koh Tao, Mango Bay is a hidden gem that rewards snorkelers with vibrant coral gardens and a wide variety of fish species. The bay’s calm waters make it an ideal spot for leisurely snorkeling. Mango Bay is best accessed by boat, adding a touch of adventure to your visit. For the more adventurous, you can take a steep and challenging drive, then hike through the jungle to get there. The many bars at the top of the hill near Mango Bay are excellent places to watch the sunset, possibly over Koh Nangyuan. It's recommended to spend a full afternoon exploring this area.
Situated near Koh Nang Yuan, Japanese Garden is named for its beautifully arranged coral formations, which resemble a traditional Japanese garden. This spot is perfect for snorkelers who appreciate intricate underwater details. Look out for clownfish darting between sea anemones and the occasional boxfish peeking out from the coral crevices. You can visit this spot via taxi boat, on a snorkelling trip, or possibly even on a daytrip to Koh Nangyuan!
